A family was thrown into mourning when their three-year-old son was electrocuted in a tragedy in Kayole, Nairobi.

The boy was electrocuted at their second-floor house as he played with other children on Monday night, police said.

He is said to have stepped on a live naked wire that killed him instantly.

The incident happened in the sprawling Nyando Soweto area.

Witnesses told police the child had been playing with his friends when he stepped on the naked wire, which connects the structure and the main grid.

He was rushed to the hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.

Police said this is the latest such incident to be reported in informal settlements.

Meanwhile, a five-year-old boy died in a fire incident in Juakali Kamkunji.

The fire also burnt down property of unknown value.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established, police said.

The deceased boy was sleeping at the time when the fire broke out at about 4 pm on Tuesday, his family told police.

Residents fought and managed to contain the fire when they stumbled on the remains of the boy.

Police said an investigation had been opened to establish the cause of the fire.

The team handling the matter said they wanted to establish if the incident was arson or accidental.

The remains were moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other procedures.
