Faithful at a church in Ruiru, Kiambu County were in for a surprise when retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, out of the blue, gave them a Sh1 million Christmas donation.
Uhuru was not present at the JCM Church but he called the pastor, who put him on the loudspeaker to talk to the congregation.
The retired president said he had been informed that the church was having a party for those who are not able to provide for themselves in these difficult times.
“I told him I could not abandon our people and whatever he is doing, I will top him up. I have told him I will extend Sh1 million so that he can buy unga for more people. I wish you happy holidays to you all and your families and may God solve the problems we are going through,” Uhuru said amid cheers from the worshipers.
He promised to find time to worship at the church come next year.
The donation comes at a time when leaders are uniting with people at the grassroots ahead of Christmas celebrations.
President William Ruto has also made Christmas donations to locals at his Sugoi home, in Uasin Gishu County.
In a festive gesture of goodwill, Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto welcomed residents to their rural home on Friday.
Long queues filled up by joyous residents as they receive packets of wheat flour, cooking oil and rice.
