Gunmen on Thursday destroyed a communication mast in Mandera County, police said.

They targeted the Fincharo Safaricom mast with various explosives and destroyed the generator, fuel tank, and solar panels at about 4 am.

Police said an unknown number of gunmen raided the area and launched an attack on the facility forcing a group of National Police Reserve to scamper for their safety.

Locals called for enhanced security and repair of the facility for normalcy.

Police who visited the scene hours later said no arrest had been made.

They also blamed locals for not cooperating with agencies in taming the attacks that seem to be creeping back after a brief lull.

This is the latest such attack in the area.

The attack comes amid an ongoing operation against the terror group in the area by multi-agency teams.

There are fears of more such attacks after dozens of the militants crossed from Somalia to Kenya on the Garissa border.

The area is near the Kenya-Somalia border which is suffering from increased al-Shabab attacks.

The border region has borne the brunt of repeated attacks from the militants who are at times aided by locals.

This has affected development at large. Most non-local teachers and other civil servants have fled the area in fear of being targeted.

On December 28, 2023, another gang attacked and destroyed a communication mast in Dasheg area, Wajir County.

The terror group used bombs to bring down the only mast in the area hence affecting communication.

Police said no injuries were reported on the National Police Reservists who were guarding the mast.

Police said they were pursuing leads on the gang’s activities.
