Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists Dentists Union (KMPDU) has held a peaceful procession in Nakuru to demand a speedy probe into the death of Laban Langat.

Langat was an intern doctor at Rift Valley Provincial General Hospital (PGH) in Nakuru.

He was found dead on Saturday morning in a trench outside Margaret Kenyatta Mother and Baby wing.

“The need to shield healthcare professionals from harm is not only a moral imperative but a testament to our shared humanity,” the union said in a statement posted on X.

Earlier, KMPDU Secretary General Davji Bhimji Atellah said the circumstances surrounding Langat's death were shrouded in mystery.

“As KMPDU, we call for an immediate and thorough investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to establish the cause of his death,” he said.

He noted the death of the young medic under mysterious circumstances underscores the pressing need for heightened security measures within health facilities.

"We demand that county governments and hospital management prioritise the safety of healthcare workers, particularly medical interns," Atellah said.

"It is imperative that hospitals adhere to KMPDU and Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) rules, including providing secure housing within hospital premises for medical interns."

Nakuru County Executive Member for Health Services Roselyn Mungai, said the medic’s body was discovered in the trenches outside the maternity wing at about 7 am.

She claimed that the body, which was later moved to the hospital morgue by the police, had no physical injuries, adding that his items were also intact.

Mungai said the deceased was identified as one of the medical officer interns who had been serving the hospital since August 2023.
