Coast, North Eastern will be extremely hot this week – Met

The weekly weather report by the Kenya Metrological Department shows that most parts of the country will remain dry this week.

The seven-day forecast covering January 30 to February 5 shows some regions such as the Coast will record very high temperatures during the day.

However, a few areas in the South Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the South-eastern lowlands and the Coast are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall.

“A few areas in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley will experience low average nighttime (minimum) temperatures of less than 10 degrees Celsius,” the forecast says.

The forecast shows that counties in North-Eastern Kenya will have sunny days and partly cloudy nights. 

They include Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa and Isiolo.

These counties will however record light morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers over a few places during the second half of the forecast period.

During that period, temperatures are expected to be as high as 38 degrees Celsius in Garissa, 37 degrees Celsius in Mandera and 34 degrees Celsius in Moyale.

The Coast counties of Mombasa, Tana-River, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale are predicted to record light to moderate morning, afternoon and night showers over a few places.

Temperatures during the forecast period will be 35 degrees Celsius in Voi, Msabaha and Mombasa and 34 degrees Celsius in Lamu and Mtwapa.

Counties in North-Western Kenya which include Turkana and Samburu will record sunny days and partly cloudy nights.

"However, light morning rains as well as afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few areas bordering South Sudan and Uganda," the weatherman says.

Temperatures during the forecast period will be as high as 39 degrees Celsius in Lodwar during the day and drop to 23 degrees Celsius at night.

The forecast shows that Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West-Pokot counties will be sunny in the morning with light rains over a few places.

"Moderate afternoon and night showers and thunderstorms are expected over few places in these counties during the forecast period," it says.

The temperatures in Kakamega, Kisumu, Nakuru, Kericho and Eldoret are predicted to be as high as 31, 30, 29, 27 and 25 degrees Celsius respectively.

Nairobi and other counties in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu and Tharaka-Nithi will record occasional cloudiness in the morning.

This is then expected to give way to sunny intervals, while light to moderate afternoon and night showers are likely to occur over a few places.

Nairobi temperatures will rise to 28 degrees Celsius during the day while Nyahururu temperatures are expected to drop to as low as 07 degrees Celsius at night.

Thika, Laikipia and Ngong will record 30, 28 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively with the temperature expected to drop to as low as 08 degrees Celsius in Laikipia.

The Southeastern lowlands counties of Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado and Taita-Taveta will record light to moderate morning rains as well as afternoon and night showers over a few places.
