FIRE INCIDENT

At least 15 girls were rushed to hospital over panic attacks following a fire incident at the St Johns Girls High School in Kaloleni, Kilifi County.

They were treated and discharged from a local hospital, officials said.

The fire destroyed a dormitory and other valuables.

Police said no injuries were reported in the Wednesday night incident.

The fire left 110 girls displaced. According to police, the fire broke out as the students were in their classes for preps.

The inferno was contained by fire engines that arrived there minutes later. The school community had also joined in efforts to contain the fire and salvage valuables.

Police had to repulse a group of youths who wanted to forcefully gain entry into the school compound to help in the efforts to contain the fire.

The security officers said the move to disperse the group following fears they may harass the girls while in the compound amid the fire chaos.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, police said.

A team of security officials visited the institution on Thursday and announced investigations are ongoing.

They said all students had been accounted for.
