The Teachers Service Commission has noted that more than 49,000 new teachers were registered in the 2022/23 academic year.

TSC in its 2022/2023 annual report said a total of 49,185 new teachers were registered in the period.

The Commission also registered 10,500 for Primary Teacher Education (PTE) who were certificate holders.

"13,084 were Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) certificate holders," the Commission said.

The TSC Act 2012 Article 237, requires the commission to register all qualified teachers before they can teach in any public or private institution.

A teacher who meets the requirements for registration is usually issued with the certificate of Registration bearing a TSC number within 30 days.

Further, TSC recruited 15,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms and engaged 26,000 intern teachers, the highest number ever recruited and engaged.

"This was aimed at achieving 100 per cent transition from primary to secondary, implementation of CBC and addressing the existing teacher shortage," the Commission said.

The Commission also provided opportunities for career growth and promoted 11,231 teachers through competitive selection and 11,069 through common cadre establishments.

Additionally, to ensure equitable distribution and optimal utilisation of the teaching resource, the Commission transferred 31,779 teachers.

This was an increase from 13,196 teachers transferred in the previous year.

To enhance employee wellbeing and mitigate the risks associated with wellness, the Commission said it built the capacity of 21, 922 employees on mental health issues and offered psychosocial support to 1,382 employees.

In a bid to improve efficiency, effectiveness and responsiveness to customer needs, TSC said various data systems were integrated.

"These systems were Human Resource Management Information System (HRMIS), Teacher Management Information System (TMIS), Electronic Document Management System (EDMS), Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) and T-Pay," the report read in part.

TSC said a total of 356,321 active teachers’ files are accessible digitally via the EDMS system.
