Four police officers were arrested in separate places over claims of being involved in crime.

This comes in the wake of the perception more police officers are turning to crime making it a case of where the hunter is being hunted.

Police authorities said all reported cases are under probe.

Among those in custody are three police constables based at Kabonge police station in Ndia, Kirinyaga County.

They were detained following the mysterious disappearance of an AK47 rifle at the weekend, police said.

Kirinyaga West subcounty police commander Moses Koskei said the three police officers were manning the police station when the firearm went missing under unclear circumstances.

“We are investigating the matter as the search for the weapon goes on,” Koskei said.

Residents had expressed concern over the missing AK47 rifle saying this can trigger the same weapon being used to commit crimes in all parts of Kirinyaga.

The weapon was loaded with 30 bullets when it went missing.

Elsewhere in Kisii, a police officer was saved from a mob that wanted to lynch him.

He was armed with an AK47 rifle at the time of the incident on February 3, police said.

The incident happened in the Mwembe area where he was accused of stealing a student’s mobile phone.

Police said the mobile phone was found on the officer and that he was injured by a mob that wanted to lynch him.

A team rushed to the scene and found the weapon lying next to the officer as he pleaded with the mob to spare him.

The weapon had 30 bullets and was taken to safe custody while the officer was taken to hospital.

Police said they were investigating the incident and that the injured officer was recuperating well in the hospital.

The officers say the incidents are isolated and should not be used to judge the service at large.

According to police, all the officers involved in crime are usually investigated and punished in accordance to the law.

Meanwhile, three police officers based at Homa Bay were arrested and charged with torture.

This follows a probe by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority.

They appeared before a chief magistrate court in Migori on February 2.

The officers were detained at the Migori Main prisons pending bail application and hearing.

The crime is said to have taken place in Homa Bay and a probe conducted before the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution approved the charges.

They were charged with torture.
