A couple ties the knot

Marriage is a legally and socially sanctioned union that usually takes place between a man and a woman.

The union is regulated by laws, rules, customs and beliefs that prescribe the rights and duties of the partners.

The union has always been considered as something special and beautiful as it brings two people who love and adore each other together.

Marriage is a sign that one has decided to spend their life with their chosen loved one and stay committed to each other.

What is World Marriage Day?

World Marriage Day is an observance that was started by the American organization Worldwide Marriage Encounter, which is associated with the Catholic Marriage Encounter movement.

The day is observed on the second Sunday of February each year.

Its purpose is declared to honour husband and wife as the foundation of the family, the basic unit of society.

It salutes the beauty of their faithfulness, sacrifice and joy in daily marriage life.

According to National Today, the day traces its origin to 1981 when married couples in Baton Rouge Louisiana, asked the mayor of the city and the Bishop of the church to proclaim February 14 (St. Valentine’s Day) as We Believe in Marriage Day.

"Following the success of the event, the idea of celebrating the day was subsequently presented to and adopted by the National Leadership of Worldwide Marriage Encounter," they said.

It then officially began in 1983 in the United States of America.

During the same year, Pope John Paul II bestowed his Apostolic Blessings on World Marriage Day and now the celebrations of this special day have expanded around the world.
