The Ministry of Health has drafted a Bill that will give guidelines on the quality of care to be offered by the over 14,000 health facilities across the country.

Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni the Quality of Care Bill will be tabled in Parliament soon.

She said the Bill was drafted after surveying the 14, 000 health facilities.

“The Bill, if passed, will provide guidelines on which services and care will be offered at each facility,” she said.

Speaking in Gichugu, Kirinyaga, the PS noted that each health facility is endowed differently in service provision, and with the implementation of social health insurance, there is a need for proper guidelines to determine which services will be offered where.

Muthoni further revealed that the government is also in the process of undertaking a scientific survey to determine the strength of homesteads in paying for the Sh300 Social Health Insurance so that the State pays for those incapable.

She said that the ministry will roll out registration for the new scheme beginning March 1, 2024.

Muthoni highlighted the government's move to start rehabilitation and counselling centres for alcohol and drug substance addicts.

She said that the Department of Public Health will roll out programmes starting with Kirinyaga county where 17 people died after consuming poisonous liquor at Kangai in Mwea West Sub-county.

She has called on the county assembly to fast-track the passing of alcoholic laws to help in the fight against illicit brew.
