Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome has given Mombasa police four days to arrest drug barons in the county.

Speaking in Mombasa during the illicit alcohol and drug eradication conference, Koome said the drug menace has continued to take a toll on many Kenyans, most of whom are the youth.

He said despite the menace, no single arrest had been made to ensure those behind were brought to book.

"I am here on duty for about four days, we must get a baron within those four days, we have no option," Koome said.

"What we are saying those drug barons must be arrested and thrown in Landcruisers, no Subaru anymore," he added.

This is even as the IG said it is high time the country rethinks the common habit where suspects are presented before courts covering their faces.

Koome said suspects cover their faces with masks, goggles and caps making it difficult to recognise their faces.

He said exposing their faces for everyone to see would be a little punishment for them.

"It has gotten to a point, these facemasks we have allowed suspects to wear when going to court; they add big goggles and adds a cap you can't even tell the face, we have to rethink those facemasks," Koome said.

He added: We must see them when they appear in court, at least that small punishment of being seen by everybody, they must face some shame."

Koome reiterated the commitment of the National Police Service to crack down on illicit alcohol and drug use in the country.

He said the war which started in Kirinyaga has since seen officers who are alleged to have sold exhibits suspended and presented to court to face charges.

Koome said he will not be cowed and will put in all the effort to ensure the challenge of drug abuse and alcoholism is dealt with once and for all.

"I cannot be cowed, I am not a politician even in my home town in Meru I don’t want to get involved in politics because I have been given work to do," Koome said.

"I have no fear. We must change the way we have been doing things, we must be ruthless if we want to save society," he warned.

Speaking at the same conference, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua questioned the silence of coastal leaders in the war on drugs.

The DP revealed that the government was highly concerned by the coastal leaders who appear to have taken a back seat in the fight against illicit brew and drugs.

"There is a serious crisis in Mombasa and the leadership is quiet. At least I can attest that Nyali MP Mohamed Ali has been vocal about the issue…But other leaders are quiet."

The DP further questioned the absence of some leaders in the forum which was important not only to the country but especially the coastal people.
