Police in Makueni county are holding three judicial officers over alleged involvement in the issuance of counterfeit receipts for payment of court fines.

The trio, a court assistant, an accountant, and a court driver were arrested Tuesday leading to an ongoing investigation.

The suspects, now held at the Nunguni police post, are awaiting arraignment in court for various charges.

In a shocking revelation, police say the receipts were utilised for the payment of court fines and forfeitures resulting in the release of accused individuals from both courts and police stations.

Upon verification, it emerged that the “forged receipts amounted to Sh161,000 and were issued between February 14 and February 16, 2024.”

The transactions were associated with traffic cases where the accused had pleaded guilty and were fined.

Police believe the suspects who are under probe played a key role in orchestrating the release of individuals through unlawful means.

Authorities will now be working to establish the full extent of the fraudulent activities involving judicial officers and traffic offenders.

This is in a bid to arrest more suspects involved in the crime and ensure that those responsible face the consequences of their actions.

The incident is expected to raise concerns about the integrity of some judicial officers.
