Kenya and the UK are looking at modalities of expediting the Nairobi Railway City Project, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced.
Speaking after hosting British High Commissioner to Kenya Neil Wigan at his Railways Headquarters offices, Mudavadi said the project will significantly enhance urban mobility in the Nairobi Metropolitan area.
“We discussed the modalities for expediting the Nairobi Railway City Project, a flagship Green Investment project showcasing the robust development cooperation between Kenya and the UK,” Mudavadi said on X.
The Nairobi Railway City is an iconic multi-modal urban development situated within 425 acres between Haile Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Landhies Road and Bunyala Road.
Last year, the government released the master plan of the proposed Nairobi Railway City, which seeks to expand and decongest the Central Business District.
The strategic location of the Nairobi Central Railway Station area positions it perfectly to be an iconic nerve Centre for the Nairobi Multimodal Transport System with a world-class new Central Railway Station incorporating mixed-use commercial developments, hotels and intermodal facilities.
In addition to increasing our revenue base, the Railway City will; regenerate the area around Nairobi Central Railway Station into a modern Railway City, provide a sustainable urban space, create an Transit Oriented Development (ToD) to support ridership for the Nairobi commuter rail, create a transport hub with multi-modal transport facilities, expand the Nairobi CBD to the South and provide an iconic development to position Nairobi as a leading world city.
Last year September, Mudavadi said the UK government had committed to prioritising the Nairobi Railway City project as part of its Africa agenda.
It followed a meeting at the UK Parliament with Rail Minister Huw Merriman and Trade Representative Theo Clarke to discuss the legal and technical matters vital for launching the railway system.
In his statement on Tuesday, Mudavadi said talks with Wigan build upon previous engagements, focusing on areas of mutual benefit to our nations.
Earlier, Mudavadi held a meeting with the Australian High Commissioner to Kenya Jenny Da Rin.
The two discussed ways to further bilateral cooperation, drawing upon the longstanding diplomatic ties of the two nations spanning over 50 years.
Mudavadi said Kenya and Australia affirmed their commitment to continued partnership and the exploration of new areas of cooperation.
Mudavadi said he presented the Kenyan case, emphasising the importance of mutual bilateral and multilateral collaboration.
He said Kenya is to attract more Australian investors in the country.
