The Teachers' employer on Tuesday announced that it had done away with the Education degree requirement for its representative at the Salaries and Remuneration Commission.

In a revised public notice published in Mygov, a state newspaper collection for government jobs and tenders, the Teachers Service Commission introduced a general degree as a condition.

This means that Kenyans with any university qualification can now apply for the slot without being limited to only having a bachelor of Education degree.

In its advertisement placed in the same paper on February 27, TSC had called for applications from graduate teachers only, locking out thousands of other degree holders.

The latest revision contained in the March 5 issue, shows that one doesn't need to be a graduate teacher to represent TSC at the SRC table.

"Pursuant to the provisions of Article 230 (2) (b) (iv) of the Constitution of Kenya (2010) and Section 5(2) of the Salaries and RemunerationCommission Act (2011), the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) invites applications from suitably qualified persons to be nominated to represent T.S.C. in the Salaries and Remuneration Commission," the notice reads in part.

Following the re-advertisement, TSC said it will extend the window for applications from March 7 to March 25, 2024.

However, other qualifications for the TSC representative at the SRC remain the same including a 10 year's experience in matters related to finance and administration, public management and Economics.

Other requirements include a decade-long experience in Human Resource Management and knowledge of Labour laws.

The TSC says that a person shall not qualify for nomination if they are a state officer including MPs, MCAs and if one is a member of a governing council of a political party.

To qualify for the position, one also needs to meet the requirement of Chapter Six of the Constitution with a distinguished career in their field.

The prospective nominee must not have been removed from office for contravening provisions of the constitution or any law.

Candidates are required to have their academic qualifications and testimonials, and a two-page curriculum vitae.

"Applications should include academic and professional certificates, testimonials, a curriculum vitae limited to two pages, and contact details such as address, telephone number, and email address,'' the notice reads.

According to Article 230(4) of the Constitution, the powers and functions of SRC include setting and regularly reviewing the remuneration and benefits of all State officers.

The Commission also advises the national and county governments on the remuneration and benefits of all other public officers.
