Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has revealed that the number of children enroled in Primary schools within the county increased due to the school feeding programme.
Sakaja said before the Dishi na County feeding programme began, there were 250,000 learners enrolled in different public schools.
“Enrollment has now skyrocketed to 310,000 learners in our schools,” he said.
Sakaja said more than 184,000 learners are fed from the programme everyday.
The learners pay Sh5 each for the feeding programme.
He said one out of every four learners has not been going to school due to hunger.
Some of the learners are forced to save some of the food they are served for their siblings and parents.
Sakaja spoke on Thursday at the Kenya Institute for Special Education in Nairobi during the inaugural Nairobi Education Conference.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu attended the event.
The Conference, which has been organised by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with partners , aims at identifying and discuss the challenges that hold back the realisation of inclusive quality education.
The theme was Revitalising quality education in Nairobi: make education work for children in Nairobi.
Further, Sakaja said there is need to increase the number of classrooms in the county.
“For the next three years, we are going to build 5,000 classrooms in Nairobi,” he said.
The devolved unit is currently building 500 classrooms for ECDE learners.
Sakaja said each classroom will be built at a cost of Sh1 million.
On Wednesday, March 27, Sakaja presided over the groundbreaking of seven central kitchens, which, when completed, will see all subcounties have a central kitchen under the Dishi na County programme.
The seven kitchens are Dandora 1 Primary School ( Embakasi East), Donholm Primary School ( Embakasi North), Mutuini Primary School ( Dagoretti South), Uhuru Gardens Primary School ( Langata), Ndururuno Primary School (Mathare sub-county), Umoja 1 Primary School ( Embakasi West) and Zawadi Primary School (Kamukunji).
