Two people have died in the Athi River flooding incident.
Athi River East subcounty police commander Anderson Mbae said the second body was found floating in waters within Kwa Mang'eli area at around midnight Wednesday.
The first man died on Wednesday after he drowned.
David Mukari's body, 24, was retrieved by the multiagency that was involved in the rescue operations along the River Athi area and taken to Shalom Community Hospital Mortuary.
Mbae said 85 rescued households had been sheltered at St. Paul's primary and Athi River primary schools within Athi River Township.
A team of government officials from both national and Machakos County are expected to lead a food distribution exercise in the said rescue centres this morning.
Police said over 2,000 people were rescued during the operations that took the better part of the day.
"The disaster management team in conjunction with the National Police Service managed to rescue 500 people at about 10.00 am with no loss of life reported," police said,
At Kwa Mang'eli village, 1500 people who had been held by the floods were rescued at about noon.
"Unfortunately, one person drowned namely David Mukari, 24, who was later retrieved and taken to Shalom Community Hospital mortuary," police stated.
Two people were also rescued at Harvest Village at about 2.00 pm.
The team later proceeded to Kasuitu village and directed the residents to keep off from the river banks.
Police said all the rescued victims were taken to St. Paul's primary school in Athi River for safety and provision of basic needs by Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti.
