Aldai MP Maryanne Kitany will make a personal statement on the floor of the House to respond to allegations levelled against her during proceedings of a committee to probe Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi on the alleged fake fertiliser fiasco.
Kitany told the House on Monday she was adversely mentioned during proceedings of the Select Committee on the proposed dismissal of Linturi.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula said he would allow the Aldai MP to respond to the allegations against her at a later date.
Kitany had requested that her name be expunged from the report of the committee since she was not allowed to also appear before members.
“As the proceedings of this committee were going on, I was adversely mentioned by the CS to the effect that I was even the sponsor of the impeachment Motion,” she said.
The Aldai MP said she requested to appear before the committee to explain herself.
“Because I was not accorded that opportunity, I request that anything that was mentioned regarding me be expunged from the report of the committee,” she added.
However, Wetang’ula said he had read the report and there was nowhere Kitany has been mentioned in the report.
“But at an appropriate time, the Speaker will give you an opportunity to make a personal statement on the floor of the House. Once you make that statement, it will not be subject to debate by anybody. It will go to the Hansard and be part of the records of the House,” Wetang’ula added.
On Wednesday, Linturi alleged that Kitany was the person behind the motion for his dismissal.
Members of the committee sharply differed on whether they needed to be given details about the past relationship of the two.
Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo requested the committee to invite Kitany to appear before members to give her version of the story.
“Although we are listening to the CS’s side, the person being mentioned is not here to defend herself and that is why we are finding it difficult to proceed. We cannot listen to one side of the spectrum when the other side is nowhere. Let the MP come to defend herself,” Omanyo said.
Committee chair Naomi Waqo said she would decide whether to invite Kitany at a later stage.
