State Department for TVETs Principal Secretary Esther Muoria has said equipment used to train students in technical institutions ought to mirror what is used in the industries.
Muoria spoke on Wednesday during a stakeholders' breakfast meeting on TVEs at 100 presided over by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
Muoria said she was in China and their learning institutions have equipment that mirror what is used in the industries.
"When I went to China I saw situations where industry and the institutions are mirrored," the PS said.
"So that is exactly what students studying at the TVET should be using in their training and access the same in the industry. That is what we want to do for our country."
Muoria said Kenya's development partners are willing to support TVETs achieve that objective.
Additionally, Muoria said her department is concluding a Cabinet memo which will be presented before the CSs for them to pronounce what they are going to do for industry to work with the TVETs.
"Even before we do the cabinet memo, the industry is already overwhelmingly with us and they are giving us more space," she said.
The PS said in the next two years, TVETs will be where they were supposed to be.
Machogu on his part said the ministry wants to change any negative notion Kenyans have about TVETs as they offer employment opportunities.
He said the ministry believes more students can be enrolled in TVETs and teachers training institutions.
Further, he said in very few years, the government has constructed 238 TVET institutions.
"We have been able to provide equipment to a number of our institutions," he said.
Machogu said trainees from TVETs are currently driving the Kenyan economy.
He said the ministry targets to have a TVET institution in all the 290 constituencies in the country.
"We have 238, there are 70 of them which still don't have equipment. But this year, we have provided funds and in two or three months we will be able to avail the required equipment to those institutions that are lacking," he said.
He said only 52 constituencies don't have a TVET and the state is working to build 16 more this year.
