Police are investigating a gun drama involving a bodyguard attached to Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr outside his private office in Nairobi.
The incident happened along Muchai Drive, off Ngong Road, in Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon, police said.
No one was injured and Mutula was not present when the shooting happened.
The bodyguard told police he was outside the office waiting for Mutula's arrival when he was robbed of his mobile phone.
He said he was communicating with the security team approaching the office with the governor through the mobile phone, when two men on a motorcycle struck.
They snatched his phone and sped off, prompting him shoot in the air to scare them. They did not stop.
The officer then hopped on a motorcycle that was nearby and gave a chase in vain.
The two vanished into a crowd, prompting the bodyguard to again shoot in the air twice.
Police said no injuries were reported but a hunt on the two is ongoing.
The team that visited the scene said the incident was a normal robbery and was not targeting the governor.
Mutula did not respond to calls and text messages over the gun drama.
Such incidents are common in parts of the city as marauding gangs target and snatch mobile phones.
They mostly use motorcycles to strike.
Police say they have intensified operations to tame the gangs and have arrested dozens.
Squads have been mobilised and sent to various locations to look for the thieves.
Police say some of the suspects are lynched by mobs after robberies.
Some of the cases are pending in courts, police say.
