President William Ruto has been invited to a summit seeking to find an end to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has said.

Mudavadi, who is also the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary, made the announcement after meeting a team led by the Head of the European Union Delegation in Nairobi ambassador Henriette Geiger.

The meeting dubbed “Summit on Peace in Ukraine” is scheduled to be held from June 15-16, 2024 in Switzerland.

Mudavadi noted the importance of the summit and informed that the invitation will be given due consideration.

“Kenya is committed to a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and continues to appeal for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through a diplomatic dialogue,” Mudavadi said in a statement.

The summit seeks to provide a platform for high-level discussions on topics of global interest such as nuclear security, food security freedom of navigation, and humanitarian issues.

It also seeks to create a common understanding at the highest political level for a comprehensive, just and durable peace in Ukraine based on the UN Charter.

Further, the meeting will initiate a process towards peace by discussing for the first time at the highest political level a roadmap on how to involve both parties in such a process.

The Russian-Ukraine war began in February 2014.

Following Ukraine's Revolution of Dignity, Russia occupied and annexed Crimea from Ukraine and supported pro-Russian separatists fighting the Ukrainian military in the Donbas War.

The first eight years of conflict also included naval incidents, cyber warfare, and heightened political tensions.

In February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine and began occupying more of the country.

Since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, its war against Ukraine has had a disastrous impact on civilian life, killing thousands of civilians, injuring many thousands more, and destroying civilian property and infrastructure.
