Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has expressed strong confidence in opposition leader Raila Odinga's ability to lead the African Union Commission (AUC).
Mudavadi affirmed that Raila possesses the requisite documents to clinch the seat and ascend to the position.
“Kenya is certain that our candidate has credentials and the passion to advocate for Africa's interests globally and champion for Africa’s interests and her people,” he said.
Mudavadi made the remarks Wednesday after holding talks with Raila at his office.
The PCS at the same time stated that they are currently in the process of preparing the application documents with necessary translations of the resume into six African Union (AU) languages of French, English, Kiswahili, Arabic, Portuguese and Arabic.
“This should be ready for submission to the AU secretariat by the end of June 2024,” he said.
The state department for foreign affairs, he said, has established a campaign secretariat which includes Raila’s strategy team.
The secretariat is set to prepare all the briefs for use by the candidate, develop campaign materials including digital presence and also prepare him for the live public debate to broadcast across Africa.
Mudavadi did not, however, provide the exact date for the live event noting it will take place six months before the election date.
They are slated for February next year.
Mudavadi further stated that an empirical campaign strategy identifying opportunities, challenges and risks that the candidate currently faces has been developed.
Raila is in a race with three other candidates from the Eastern Africa region.
They are Djibouti’s Foreign Affairs minister Mahmoud Youssouf, Somalia’s former deputy prime minister and current member of the Federal Parliament Fawzia Yusuf and Seychelles's former Vice President Vincent Meriton.
In the polls, chairmanship is ringfenced for the Eastern Africa region, while Northern Africa will front the vice chairperson.
They are all seeking to replace Moussa Faki of Chad.
The winner will serve for a four-year term.
President William Ruto who backs his bid has already secured support from various countries including Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, Guinea Bissau and Angola among others.
