Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe has assured tea farmers from Mt Kenya region of his support for justice in the cash crop sector.
Kagombe said nothing will stop him from serving his electorate; the people of Gatundu South.
“I will continue serving the people of Gatundu, especially those who are worried about the tea sector. Their justice would be served to them,” Kagombe said.
He spoke shortly after he was released from custody by Machakos High Court on a Sh1 million cash bail on Friday.
The legislator said the forthcoming political processes in the elections of tea farmers won’t be derailed by his current woes.
“The rights of tea farmers will prevail in the coming elections. They will get justice,” Kagombe said.
He thanked his friends, family members and colleagues whom he said stood with him when he was incarcerated and held in police custody for close to two weeks before his release on Friday.
“The people who gave me encouragement especially those from Gatundu South who have also stood with me during this trying moment and who continue to have confidence in me as their leader,” Kagombe said.
Kagombe said nothing will stop him from diligently serving his electorate.
The legislator was released on Sh2 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail and surety of the same amount.
Kagombe was released after he pleaded not guilty to murder charges levelled against him at the high court in Machakos on Friday.
He appeared before Judge Francis Olel who had earlier ordered a mental assessment be done on him before he took plea.
"The court has considered applications by both the prosecution and defence lawyers and hereby order that the accused person be released on Sh2 million bond or Sh1 million cash bail and surety of a similar amount," Olel ordered.
Olel ordered that the MP be produced in court on July 17, 2024.
"The suspect should neither contact witnesses nor visit the area where the incident occurred," Olele ruled.
The Judge also ordered that the probation department should do a report and submit it before him in 30 days.
The MP has been in police custody for close to two weeks now after he was arrested for the alleged murder of the bodaboda operator in the Thika subcounty.
The MP was first arraigned before the same Judge last week where he was charged with murder contrary to section 203 as read with section 204 of the penal code.
