President William Ruto will be the chief guest at the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Kenya Air Force (KAF).

Ruto is expected back in the country today from his trip to Korea.

The event, set for Saturday (June 8) at the Moi Air Base in Eastleigh, Nairobi will feature a showcase of the service’s capabilities and achievements over the past six decades.

KAF is a pivotal institution in Kenya's Defence Forces (KDF) structure playing a crucial role in safeguarding Kenya’s airspace and territorial integrity.

In effectively delivering on its mandate, it is supported by a network of bases and forward operating bases across the country.

Over the years, KAF has also extended its responsibilities beyond logistics to include vital humanitarian efforts and fostering regional cooperation.

During the event, it will highlight its historical milestones, advancements in military technology, and contributions to national security.

Central to its success are its well-trained personnel, whose diverse skill sets reflect the significant investment by the government in their development.

This commitment to training and excellence has been key to maintaining the high operational standards of the Air Force.

KAF was founded on June 1, 1964, coinciding with Kenya’s first Madaraka Day anniversary.

It is one of the three services that includes the Kenya Army and Kenya Navy of the KDF.

The service recently witnessed a historic moment following the appointment of Major General Fatuma Ahmed as the first female service commander.

Fatuma succeeded Lt Gen John Omenda who was promoted as the vice chief of Defence forces.

The milestone will also offer an opportunity for the KDF to honour the men and women who have contributed to KAF’s storied history.

As part of the activities organised in the lead-up to the event, officers, airmen and women took part Thursday in a 60-kilometre walk and cycling exercise.

The event flagged off by Kenya Air Force Deputy Commander Brigadier Samwel Kipkorir saw the participation of 14 cyclists and 32 hikers, highlighting the unity and resilience of KAF personnel.

“Your commitment today exemplifies the unwavering spirit of the Kenya Air Force. This event not only commemorates the rich history but also inspires future generations to uphold the values of excellence and service,” said Kahariri.

Kipkorir on his part emphasized the significance of the event as a tribute to the KAF’s legacy

“This walk and bike ride is more than a test of physical strength; they are a testament to our collective commitment and the strong bonds that unite us as a Service,” he stated.
