President William Ruto left the country Thursday evening for Italy where he will participate in the 50th G7 Summit in Apulia.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed said the President will thereafter head to Switzerland for the first summit on peace in Ukraine.

Mohamed said Ruto will peak at both summits on African leaders’ commitment to fostering a prosperous world through fairer international financial system and the importance of collectively addressing global challenges.

“At the G7 Summit, President Ruto will emphasise the importance of involving African countries in processes aimed at finding solutions to global challenges such as climate change and conflicts,” Mohammed said in a statement.

He added that the president will also highlight Africa’s potential for green industrialisation, digital revolution and innovation.

He added that Ruto will also outline AU reforms aimed at enhancing trade and development, peace and stability and greater global participation.

Come Sunday, Ruto will join other heads of states and government to discuss a common path towards peace in Ukraine in Burgenstock, Switzerland.

“He will address the negative impacts of the conflict in Ukraine and conflicts globally, including those in Africa and offer solutions informed by Kenya’s experiences on mediation and peacebuilding on the continent,” Mohammed said.

He added that the president will also advocate for a reformed, more representative, democratic and effective United Nations system to better address global peace and security challenges.

Ruto was invited to the Russia-Ukraine conflict summit after a meeting between the European Union delegation in Kenya and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Mudavadi noted the importance of the summit and informed that the invitation will be given due consideration.

“Kenya is committed to a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict and continues to appeal for a peaceful resolution of the conflict through a diplomatic dialogue,” the Prime CS said in a statement.

The summit seeks to provide a platform for high-level discussions on topics of global interest such as nuclear security, food security freedom of navigation and humanitarian issues.

It also seeks to create a common understanding at the highest political level for a comprehensive, just and durable peace in Ukraine based on the UN Charter.

Further, the meeting will initiate a process towards peace by discussing for the first time at the highest political level a roadmap on how to involve both parties in such a process.
