The Opposition coalition Azimio has faulted the 2024-25 Budget saying it fails to address the concerns of Kenyans.

Azimio principal Kalonzo Musyoka said Kenyans should brace for tough times as there will be a Sh23.6 billion increase in recurrent expenditure in the Executive arm of the government.

“It is our contention that despite the Budget Estimate 2024-25 hyperbole, flowery language and complicated figures, it simply does not stimulate economic activity. It does the opposite and seeks to tax every adult Kenyan Sh24,000 more,” he claimed.

“Do not take our word for it. These are some of the examples of increased expenditure," Kalonzo said.

"Office of the Executive President (Sh1.2 billion), Office of the Deputy President (Sh678 million), Ministry of Defence (Sh11 billion), Foreign Affairs (1.4 billion), National Treasury (Sh6 billion), ministry of Transport (Sh1.3 billion) and ministry of Cooperatives (Sh2 billion).”

The Opposition urged the international community, civil society organisations and concerned citizens - both at home and abroad - to stand in solidarity with Kenyans in condemning the Kenya Kwanza regime's blatant disregard for the public good.

“We call for quick action to bring those responsible for this breach of trust accountable and to lobby for a budgetary framework that prioritises the needs and concerns of all Kenyans, not just the privileged few,” Kalonzo added.

He said Kenya Kwanza may have been successful in unveiling its punitive budget, but has fallen short of its obligation to lead with honesty, fairness and compassion.

“Kenyans deserve better and we will not stop fighting for them to be given the voice and direction they so richly deserve,” he added.

He said the budgetary allocations do not promote economic growth, but betray Kenyans.

“This regime has concealed its true goals of maintaining an oppressive, unequal system benefiting a select few elites under the illusion of progress,” he stated.
