19-year-old Ian Njoroge who is accused of assaulting a police officer along Kamiti Road has apologised to kenyans.
The teenager who denied robbery with violence and causing grievous harm charges is out on bond following the intervention of former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko.
In a meeting with Sonko at his office alongside his parents, Njoroge tendered his apology to Kenyans and to the traffic officer saying the incident will not repeat.
"I take this chance to offer my apologies to the state and Jacob Ogendo( the assaulted cop). I am sorry and it will never happen again. I am sorry," Ian said.
Ian's mother also apologised on behalf of her son and appreciated Sonko's help in getting Ian out of remand.
"To you Mike Sonko, thank you again for coming in when I needed that help the most," Ian's mother said.
Ian's father also apologised for his son's mistake, particularly to the police force.
Sonko said Ian has learnt lessons from his mistake the hard way, adding that he has expressed commitment to being a good person going forward.
Sonko told off a section of Kenyans who criticised his kind gesture towards Ian saying they should learn to nurture children instead of condemning them because of mistakes they make.
"Such things happen in life. You can have a child-like Ian, he has made a mistake and he has apologised. As a leader on behalf of this family, on behalf of Ian we apologise to the National Police Service and all the officers in the country in uniform we are saying pole," Sonko said.
Sonko said Ian will undergo mentorship to ensure such incidences are tamed.
"I will look for a counsellor to speak to Ian before he goes back to school in September," he said.
Sonko said Ian is still young and should therefore not be subjected to unnecessary drama just because he made a mistake.
Milimani principal magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi last week released Njoroge on a Sh700,000 bail after dismissing the application by the prosecution to have him detained.
While delivering his ruling, the magistrate noted that the prosecution's claim that he was in danger if released because other officers wanted revenge was not sufficient to have the accused detained.
Ekhubi has also ruled that the robbery With Violence charge against Njoroge is unconstitutional since section 96 (2) of the Penal Code where the said offence was anchored was declared unconstitutional by the High Court.
"The allegations that Ian Njoroge should not be released on bail and or bond because he is a flight risk is plausible since it is not supported by any evidence," the magistrate said.
