Police in Nairobi threw caution to the wind and lobbed tear gas inside a public service vehicle during protests against the Finance Bill, 2024.

Officers at the Central Business District fired a tear gas canister into a Super Metro minibus on Moi Avenue near Nairobi Sports House.

It was not immediately clear if there were serious injuries in the vehicle but videos showed heavy smoke coming out of the stationary bus.

The management of Super Metro promised to issue a statement later.

"We condemn this act we will issue a statement in the day," a statement on X read.

The risk of injury from tear gas is greater indoors than outside.

Experts warn that exposure to tear gas indoors, or in large amounts, may have serious health effects which include glaucoma, blindness, chemical burns and respiratory failure

There is also the risk of being hit by tear gas cartridges that may cause severe bruising, loss of eyesight, or skull fracture, resulting in death.

People with respiratory conditions have a higher risk of serious symptoms after tear gas exposure. These conditions include asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The tear gas was lobbed into the bus as protests kicked off in several parts of the country ahead of the much anticipated parliamentary vote on the contested Finance Bill 2024.

Organisers of the Occupy Parliament protests, which began in Nairobi, are demanding that the bill be rejected in its entirety.

The protests paralysed businesses in the city centre as police engaged different groups in running battles.

Debate on the Finance Bill 2024 is underway in Parliament ahead of the voting.
