Over 58 cops injured, nine police vehicles damaged in anti-Finance Bill protests

At least 20 police officers reported injured from Githurai subcounty alone

At least 58 police officers were injured during the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations in various towns across the country.

Nine police vehicles were also torched or damaged, a police report to Vigilance House seen by the Star shows.

This follows the youth-led protests that began on Tuesday last week and ended on Thursday, June 27.

The police said Kiambu county recorded the most casualties with 29 officers sustaining injuries and eight police vehicles.

Some 20 police officers were injured from the Githurai subcounty while nine were Kikuyu subcounty.

Four of the damaged vehicles were from the Githurai subcounty, three Kikuyu subcounty and one from Limuru county.

One other vehicle was also damaged on the windscreen in Murang'a County.

In Nyeri County, 10 police officers sustained injuries from the protests.

"A police constable of Kerugoya Police Station (Kirinyaga county) was hit by a stone on his nape," police said.

He was rushed to Kerugoya Referral Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

In the Coast region, at least seven police officers were injured as they engaged the protesters. Six including a Corporal and five police constables sustained injuries in Kilifi County.

A Corporal was injured in Mombasa county.

In Makueni, eight officers including three Corporals and five police constables were injured by demonstrators.

"The anti-riot team proceeded and found a group of about 300 demonstrators who had already barricaded the road with bonfires, and upon seeing the police the riotous started engaging officers on running battles and throwing stones at officers," the police said.

In Kajiado, two officers manning a bank in Rongai were attacked by rioters who overpowered them and took their guns on Thursday.

The guns were, however, recovered after anti-riot police stepped in to help them but some bullets were missing.

One of the officers is still admitted to the hospital while the other was attended to by the Red Cross and discharged.

On Tuesday, June 25, still in Rongai, a police officer accidentally discharged a bullet shooting herself in the leg.

The incident happened as she tried to stop protesters from invading the Rongai police station.

"The rifle of one PC developed a stoppage and was trying to clear the same, she accidentally discharged and shot herself, occasioning injury to herself on the right leg," police said.

The protests across the country have led to tens of deaths.

In Nairobi alone, after the Tuesday protests, the most heated of all, 12 deaths were reported by the Nairobi County Government.
