President William Ruto on Sunday said that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will not be deployed on the streets during Tuesday's planned protests, provided the demonstrations remain peaceful.

Speaking during a media roundtable Sunday night at State House, Nairobi, Ruto assured the public that the KDF will not be in Nairobi CBD on Tuesday.

"First, the Kenya Defence Forces will not be on the street. They only come as a last result. If the demonstrations will be peaceful, I promise you, the police will be there to protect the demonstrators," Ruto said

He said the police will be there to ensure everyone's safety and security, including those who may disrupt the protest by causing trouble or damaging property.

"Police will also be there to make sure that those who come to ban offices and loot property are dealt with," he said.

"That is my commitment. We must all operate within the law and that is what it is."

President Ruto said properties worth Sh2.4 billion were destroyed during the protests.

He blamed the destruction on a group of criminals who he said infiltrated peaceful protesters.

The protests last week saw a group of people storm Parliament, a move that left a section of the House burnt.

During the raid, several people were shot leaving some of them dead and others injured.

This led to the deployment of Kenya Defence Officers in the streets of Nairobi.

CS Aden Duale gazetted their deployment and said it would last until normalcy resumes in the country.
