Members of Senate have mourned Kenyans who died during the anti-Finance Bill protests.

Led by the Speaker Amason Kingi, Senators were seen observing a moment of silence to honour those who passed away.

"We are all aware that because of the happenings that have been going on, we have lost Kenyans. As a house we need to reflect on these happenings," Speaker Kingi said.

He said leaders need to do some soul-searching to address the issues raised in the country over the past two weeks.

"The many issues that have been raised by those who have been protesting cannot be wished away," he said.

"Nobody is better placed to address those issues other than the leadership and more particularly the Senate."

He termed the Senate as the only legislative arm of the government that goes to the grassroots level in a bid to protect counties and their governments.

"We have to confront the realities of today as a house, as a leadership," he added.

Kingi stated that the country currently needs good leadership and governance more than ever before.

During the sitting the Senate called upon the National Police to exercise restraint in dealing with peaceful and unarmed demonstrators.

Additionally, it called upon the release of all persons arrested for planning and participating in protests against the 2024 Finance Bill.

It also called for the government to waive all hospital bills and funeral expenses of those who were injured or lost their lives during the protests.

The judiciary was also called upon to prioritise and expedite all cases relating to the enactment of the Finance Bill.
