From over Sh1.1 million Mumias MP Peter Salasya earned as a salary for June, he went home with a meagre Sh2,364.

This was evidenced by a payslip the MP shared on his Facebook page on Wednesday

"Hii ndio salary yangu. Kama yangu inakaa hivi, ya askari mwalimu na daktari zinakaa aje?" Salasya said.

Loosely translates to: "This is my salary. If mine looks like this, what of that of teachers and doctors?"

From the payslip, apart from the MP's basic salary of Sh435,301, the MP was paid an administrative allowance, of Sh140,201, a house allowance of Sh150,000 and a sitting allowance of Sh 67,500.

The MP was also paid a telephone allowance of Sh15,000 and a vehicle fixed cost of Sh356,525.

The basic pay plus allowances totalled Sh1,164,527.

However, the amount was subjected to massive deductions that reduced his net pay significantly.

From the amount, Sh360,466 was deducted as PAYE, Sh541,947 went to mortgage, the staff pension fund took Sh54,847, Sh16,455 was deducted as Housing Levy and NHIF took 1,700.

Other deductions are Sh85,981 for car loan, Sh4,640 for ration and messing, Sh5,000 for Kenya Young Parliament Association (KYPA), Sacco Deposits Sh10,000, Housing Shares Sh10,000, Pacoso shares Sh70,000 and Car loan life insurance Sh1,124.

The deductions totalled Sh1,162,162, leaving the MP with Sh2364 as net pay.

Explaining how he survives, the MP said:

"I posted about my salary..., even if I have taken a mortgage, can't I invest in a business that can give me Sh20,000 or Sh10,000 a day?"
