The government has profiled all individuals alleged to be the key financiers of the ongoing protests in the country, Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has said.

Duale said investigations are in the final stages and the suspects including politicians and businessmen are set to be arraigned in court in the next 10 days.

He noted that the security agencies are compiling the list and obtaining the necessary evidence to sustain the case in court.

“In a couple of 10 days, or two weeks they will be arraigned in court. We will not allow the destruction that took place, the deaths and the looting that happened,” he said.

He expressed optimism that the Director of Public Prosecutions will have a solid case to prefer charges on the suspects which he said include directors of some nongovernmental organisations.

“We know them, and we will not allow them to cause mayhem in the country,” Duale said during a TV interview on Wednesday night.

He said there was a systematic plan by the sponsored criminals to invade critical institutions and burn them.

The individuals on the police radar, sources say, are suspected to have engaged in mobilising, and paying youth from slum areas to infiltrate the protests and turn them violent.

They are also said to have provided logistical support as transport to the youth in major towns.

The politicians are said to be from Nairobi, Rift Valley and Mt Kenya regions.

UDA party Secretary General Cleophas Malala echoed the sentiment saying despite the protests being largely non-aligned in the initial stages, political interests have taken it over.

Malala, in a statement, urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) to expedite their investigations into the violent incidents that marred the demonstrations.

“We specifically urge these agencies to identify and prosecute the financiers, sponsors, and perpetrators responsible for funding the goons who infiltrated the peaceful protests, resulting in violence and looting,” he said.
