The family and friends of the slain protester Rex Kanyike Masai on Thursday gathered to remember and mourn him in a memorial service.

Emotions were rife as the family and friends tried to come to terms with the sudden death of their son.

Rex was eulogised as a courageous man and a champion of justice whose bright future has been suddenly cut off.

While mourning her son, Rex's mother described the feeling she had when she first held him.

She described the moment as a turning point in her life after she received her bundle of joy.

"Rex, the strength of my youth, my first feeling as a mother, my first sleepaway taker but it holds for joy. I remember my first time breastfeeding you, you were my bundle of joy. I remember our first milestones, tembea baba tembea and you were looking back at me smiling," Rex's mother said during the memorial service at ACK ST Stephens Cathedral Jogoo Road.

Rex's mother said that her son taught her to wear many hats, such as a lawyer and a teacher.

"Rex my first patient, you turned my fingers into a thermometer, I used to measure your temperature with my fingers. You taught me to be a teacher and a lawyer. Here you are teaching me how to live without you."

She mourned saying her son who taught her to be the strong woman she is left her with no last words.

"Sincerely, this is more than labour pains, may the Lord teach me how to delete your number in my phone. Goodnight my love, goodnight my teacher and goodnight until we meet again," she added.

Rex's life was suddenly cut short by a bullet during the anti-Finance Bill protests in Nairobi.

He was a young and creative man who had amassed a successful career.

Police said they are investigating the circumstances under which Rex was shot and killed.

Human Rights organisations have condemned Rex's killing and called for a probe.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority said it has already instituted investigations into the fatal shooting.

Director of Public Prosecution Renson Ingonga directed the Authority to submit a report of the investigations within 21 days.
