Ruto defends claims he lacks empathy

Says for the first time when people were evacuated due to floods, they were resettled.

President William Ruto has defended claims that his government lacks empathy whenever various disasters hit the country.

Ruto while speaking on X Space on Friday said the government has been at the forefront of response in various issues.

The President was responding to an X user in the space discussion who had claimed that he had failed to show empathy, especially during serious times such as the recent floods and anti-Finance Bill protests.

"There is one problem with you Mr President, you are not empathetic, and that is something that has angered very many people,

"During the finance bill protests, you were silent until people started losing their lives that is when you decided to reject the finance bill," he told Ruto.

In a rejoinder, Ruto gave an example of government response during the recent floods saying that for the first time when people were evacuated due to floods, they were resettled.

"Those living in riparian land were given Sh10,000 to relocate from the danger of the river," Ruto said.

He said that during the floods he convened three Cabinet meetings and additionally in the company of his ministers visited those affected in Mukuru kwa Njenga.

He added that the government spent close to Sh400 million to facilitate those affected by floods.

Ruto promised that those affected by floods will be the first beneficiaries of the social housing programme.

Additionally, Osama Otero the host, narrated his horrific experience where he was abducted by police officers.

Addressing the issue of extra-judicial killings in Githurai, Ruto said there has been massive misinformation on the numbers of those who lost their lives in the fore said.

"I will never say anything that is not factual, you saying 200 people were killed in Githurai is not factual," he said.

He offered a chance to the families of those who claimed to have lost their loved ones that night in Githurai to step forward.
