Nyeri MCAs have now been pulled into the differences between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi over the war against illicit alcohol in the county.

The ward's reps have accused the MP of acting outside his mandate as they asked him to show the Deputy President respect.

“We are asking him to respect us and to respect the Deputy President. He is acting outside the scope of his work. Licensing of alcohol outlets is the work of county government,” said David Kibatha (Iriani).

The MCAs said the County Assembly knows genuine businesses, which will be allowed to operate.

The ward reps said only businesses operating outside the law will remain closed.

Their remarks came hot on the heels of a statement by the MP that owners of alcohol enterprises should not be intimidated.

“If any chief or the Deputy County Commissioner has any problem with any business in Mathira, he should come with the reasons,” Wamumbi stated.

During a meeting with bar owners in Karatina town, Wamumbi said he has been on the frontline fighting illicit brew and the bar owners are not selling the poisonous alcohol.

MCA however accuse him of undermining the fight against illicit brew.

Recently, Gachagua criticised some leaders, including the Ministry of Interior, for opposing his initiative to end the illicit brew menace in the Mt. Kenya region.

The DP claimed that those who oppose the fight are tarnishing President Ruto's legacy, particularly now that the fight against illicit drugs has gained traction.
