President William Ruto has named Eliud Langat as Acting Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service
Lang'at takes over from Douglas Kanja Kirocho who was named the acting Inspector General of Police.
Lag'at was until his appointment serving as the commandant, of the General Service Unit.
Lang'at was appointed the GSU commandant during changes announced by Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei, on April 12, 2023.
Lang'at is also an explosives and post-blasts expert who headed the forensic Bomb Disposal unit and the directorate of Reforms at DCI headquarters.
He is also an alma mater of the National Defence College of Kenya.
He will oversee the operations of the biggest unit within the Kenya Police Service until a substantive holder is recruited.
The recruitment of police commanders is done by the Kenya Police Service Commission through competitive interviews.
GSU is the single biggest, elite and key unit in police operations with a population of about 12,000.
The DIG should manage, monitor and evaluate KPS, undertake the supervision of the service, coordinate training in KPS, and provide internal oversight of the service.
The President should appoint each Deputy Inspector General of Police with the recommendation of the National Police Service Commission.
The DIG Kenya Police Service should be subject to the direction, command and control of the Inspector-General—be responsible for the effective and efficient day-to-day administration and operations of the Kenya Police Service.
