A police officer is nursing gunshot wounds after he shot and injured himself in the leg while battling muggers in Lunga Lunga slums, Nairobi.

The officer pulled the trigger by accident and shot himself in the left toe, police said.

The officer was among a team that responded to distress calls from locals on Monday at about 9 pm that a gang was terrorizing and robbing them in the Gakoe area.

The group was armed with knives and targeted pedestrians robbing them of cash and valuables.

The officers cornered one suspect who was armed with a knife and as one of them corked the weapon to order him to surrender, he accidentally pulled the trigger as the pistol pointed to the ground.

This is as he wrestled the suspect, police said.

The bullet pierced through his shoe and badly injured the toe.

The suspect was arrested by other officers who had arrived there, police said.

The constable of police was rushed to hospital in stable condition while the suspect was detained.

A knife was recovered from the suspect, police said.

Police said the suspect is likely to face robbery with violence charges.

Meanwhile, a gang raided the house of a manager of a self-help group in Loima, Turkana County and robbed staff of Sh130,000.

The robbery was staged on Monday night in Locherekuyan village when two men armed with a firearm stormed into the house and ordered the occupants to lie down and show them the metal box used to keep the money for the self-help group.

The owner of the house handed the box to them and they left while firing into the air.

The metal box that contained the stolen money was found empty and abandoned in the bush with one Itel mobile phone believed to belong to one of the thugs.

A spent cartridge of 7.62mm*39 was also recovered at the scene, police said.

Police suspect the suspects had prior information about the cash.

A team is investigating the drama, police said.

Police in the area are among those perceived insecure in general due to its proximity to the South Sudan border.
