The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has maintained that victims of police brutality during anti-government protests beginning from last year must be compensated before the national dialogue can be commenced.
In resolutions reached during the joint meeting of the Parliamentary Group and the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, ODM said compensation is one of the conditions to be met before the dialogue to create a conducive environment for talks.
Secretary General Edwin Sifuna said the apprehension of officers implicated in these incidents is another condition that has to be met.
He added that the party wants an amnesty for all those arrested/abducted and the interdiction of Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei.
“The meeting endorsed the call by the Central Committee of the party during its meeting of July 12, 2024, for a National Convention that would bring together all the people of Kenya,” Sifuna said.
“This meeting reiterated the need for this convention to be all-inclusive, people-centred and constitutionalised.”
Sifuna added that the party leadership was expressly mandated to prioritise policy proposals on long-standing matters among them negative ethnicity, unemployment and social justice.
“A detailed policy position shall be shared once the preconditions are met and the convention convened,” he said.
“Each and every issue should be on the table for us to find lasting solutions to the issues bedevilling our nation as the people of Kenya.”
