Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has said President William Ruto has a second golden opportunity to appoint individuals with impeccable integrity in his new Cabinet.

His remarks come on a day the President is expected to unveil his new Cabinet at State House days after he sent packing the previous office holders on July 11 save for Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

Speaking on Spice FM, Ahmednasir said Ruto has an opportunity to give his administration a fresh start by getting it right on who he settles on in the various ministerial portfolios.

“President Ruto has an excellent chance, I mean his government was almost run out of town by these young people who demonstrated and they have genuine grievances because they want a better Kenya,” he said.

“A Kenya that listens to them, that delivers to them and I think the task of the President in reconstituting his Cabinet is to address that,” he added.

Ruto on Wednesday officially gazetted the dismissal of his Cabinet and highlighted reasons behind the drastic action including that he had reflected and listened keenly to what Kenyans had said in light of the mass protests led by the Gen Z.

Ruto further said that he had considered the need to review his Cabinet to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, transparency and accountability in public service delivery.

Ahmednasir said Ruto now has an opportunity to give Kenyans competent and qualified individuals to better equip and orientate the government in its implementation of the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda as he stated in the gazette notice.

“I’m told he wants to form a broad-based government which is a good thing for this country. The result is better, the end result is what determines the process is not important,” he said.

He reiterated that the President cannot reappoint any of the former CSs considering the basis on which he fired them.

“The President has given very well reasoned [explanation] why he dismissed them. There are governance issues, there’s transparency issues, there are accountability issues, those are his words, not mine. So if he fires because of transparency and accountability, he can’t bring them back,” he said.

The senior counsel expressed confidence that the President will not get it wrong as far as ensuring he appoints only individuals with integrity.

“I think the President will not miss, this is the second opportunity. If he doesn’t get it right, then we will realise that the fundamental problem this country faces is the President himself,” he said.

Ahmednasir said he understands there must be a lot of lobbying going on by those who want to maintain the status quo but the President should be very selfish and make choices that serve the interests of his government and the people of Kenya.

“He should be concerned with himself, his government, rather than seeing whether someone should come back to Cabinet. You know it’s not very difficult to know what Kenyans want; we all know what we want.”

Ruto is expected to address the nation at 4 pm from State House where it's highly expected he will unveil the face of his new Cabinet.
