Bungoma County government has clarified that it did not spend Sh25 million on flowers during this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations.

In a statement, the county said the term "beautification" was misinterpreted, as it encompasses a range of activities beyond just the purchase of flowers.

“Indeed, Sh25 million was allocated by the Bungoma County Assembly for the comprehensive beautification, which included a scope of work which were undertaken while some are ongoing,” the county said.

The county explained that beautification included planting of ornamental trees, flowers, and grass: which took place along the seven-kilometre dual carriage highway from Kanduyi to Musikoma.

It further explained that the exercise also included excavation and clearing of drainages.

“Soil excavation and clearing of clogged drainages was undertaken throughout the town, particularly along walkways to improve urban sanitation and infrastructure,” the county said.

It further said the contract also included the construction of dwarf walls and other structures along the dual carriageway to enhance the aesthetic appeal and functionality of the area and the erection of metallic sculptures.

The county added that there was fabrication of dustbins and placing them strategically around the town to facilitate easier and more efficient garbage collection.

“These projects were all part of the comprehensive plan detailed in the Bill of Quantities in the tender. The works are yet to be inspected and certified for payment. Once that is done the documents will be availed for public consumption,” the county said.

“We remain committed to transparency and the prudent use of resources.”

Lusaka had revealed that Bungoma spent Sh25 million towards the beautification of the town ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations.

Addressing the press on Friday, Lusaka said the beautification included the purchase and planting of flowers along the Musikoma-Kanduyi dual-carriageway.

He was responding to the questions raised by Gen Z during protests.
