Protesters were late Tuesday still engaging police in running battles in areas on the outskirts of Nairobi as they retreated to their homes after day-long demonstrations in the CBD.

Footage shared online from high-rise residential apartments showed crowds taking to their heels with anti-riot police hot on their trail.

In Pipeline, Embakasi, a video image captured a police water cannon driven within the estate whilst spraying coloured water into residential apartments as protesters and residents took cover.

Live feeds from various other online news websites showed a group of officers keeping watch along Outering Road which remained deserted.

Loud bangs are heard intermittently.
