Minority Leader in the National Assembly Opiyo Wandayi has said he will be honoured to serve the country as the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum.

In a message posted on X, the Ugunja MP thanked President William Ruto for nominating him for the position on Wednesday.

“It will be a great honour and privilege to serve my country in this new capacity if I secure the approval of the National Assembly. My gratitude to Baba,” he stated.

Wandayi further thanked the Opposition leader Raila Odinga for his “enduring mentorship and tutelage.”

Wandayi is now set to be vetted by Parliament and if approved he will become the new CS to succeed Davis Chirchir who has been nominated to take up that of Roads previously held by Kipchumba Murkomen.

He is serving his third term in parliament having been first elected in 2013 on the ODM ticket.

Ugunja constituency was hived off from Ugenya constituency making it the sixth constituency in Siaya county.

Once appointed, the electoral commission will declare a vacancy in the Ugunja constituency parliamentary seat.

Wandayi went to Sikalame Primary School and later sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1986.

Opiyo later joined Sawagongo Secondary School where he attained his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) four years later.

The lawmaker would later join the University of Nairobi to pursue a Bachelor of Science in agriculture.
