Ruto nominates Wandayi new Energy CS nominee

President William Ruto has nominated Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi as the new cabinet secretary for Energy.

Opiyo is the current National Assembly's minority leader.

He is now set to be vetted by parliament and if approved he will become the new CS to succeed Davis Chirchir who has been nominated to take up that of Roads previously held by Kipchumba Murkomen.

Wandayi is serving his third term in parliament having been first elected in 2013 on the ODM ticket.

Ugunja constituency was hived off from Ugenya constituency making it the sixth constituency in Siaya county.

Once appointed, the electoral commission will declare a vacancy in the Ugunja constituency parliamentary seat.

Wandayi was born on June 22, 1972.

He was then enrolled at Sikalame Primary School and later sat for his Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) in 1986.

Opiyo later joined Sawagongo Secondary School where he attained his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) four years later.

The lawmaker would later join the University of Nairobi to pursue a Bachelor of Science in agriculture.

In 2008, he joined the Kenya Institute of Management (KIM) for a Diploma course in Business Management.

In 2010 he enrolled at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) as an MBA executive.

He is pursuing an LLB at Daystar University.

Wandayi is a vocal lawmaker and one of the key foot soldiers of opposition leader Raila Odinga.

He was once ejected from parliament after disrupting retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s State of the Nation address by constantly blowing a whistle.

He was given a suspension from parliament until the end of the session.

He, however, challenged the action by the Speaker before the High Court which ordered he be allowed back to the House citing that his electorate was not being represented
