Met: Cold, rains to continue in parts of Kenya

In the 7-day forecast, Met said rainfall will continue in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, North Western Kenya and Rift Valley and Coast.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has said that rainfall, intermittent cold and cloudy conditions will continue in different parts of the country in the next seven days.

Meteorological Services director David Gikungu said rainfall will continue in some parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, North Western Kenya and Rift Valley and Coast.

"Intermittent cold and cloudy conditions are expected in some parts of Highlands East and West of Rift Valley, the Southern Lowlands and the Rift Valley," Met said.

The Met department also noted that counties in the Rift Valley and its West Highlands are likely to receive morning rains, afternoon showers and thunderstorms while showers are likely to occur at night.

“The counties to experience this are Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Busia, Migori, Narok, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin-Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet and West-Pokot,” the Met department said.

"This will also spread across Turkana and Samburu counties."

While intermittent cloudiness with light rains in the morning will be experienced in the Central region, afternoon and occasional night showers will also be experienced in a few places.

This will also be experienced in Marsabit, Mandera, Wair, Garissa and Isiolo Counties although sun intervals will be there during the day.

However, temperatures of more than 30 degrees Celsius during the daytime will be experienced in Kilifi, Lamu, Garsen, Tana River, Bara, Garissa and Daadab.

"Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera and Bute Helu in the North-eastern together with Bubisa, Marsabit, Kalacha Lodwar, Turkana, Kakuma and Lokitalang in North western part of the country will also be affected by the high temperatures and North-Western," Met said.

According to the Met department, the highest seven-day rainfall of 98mm was recorded at the automatic weather station at Alale Girls Secondary School in West Pokot County between July 23-28, 2024.

Comparing the July 15 to 21 July and the July 23 to 28 periods, the department has noted that day-time (maximum) temperatures increased over much of the country but a few stations including Suba, Lamu and Mtwapa recorded marginal cooling.

Night-time (minimum) temperatures decreased over most parts of the country with only a few stations such as Voi, Makindu and Kakamega recording slight warming.

Mandera Meteorological Station recorded the highest daily maximum temperature: 37.4°C on 28 July 2024 while Nyahururu Meteorological Station recorded the lowest daily minimum temperature: 7.4°C on 23 July 2024.

The same stations recorded the highest seven-day average maximum temperature and the lowest seven-day average minimum temperature: 35.3°C and 9.6°C respectively.
