Juja MP George Koimburi has today been granted an opportunity to apologise on the floor of the House over his allegations that MPs who voted in favour of the rejected Finance Bill were bribed.

Last week, the lawmaker wrote to speaker Moses Wetang'ula seeking an apology from the House leadership and the members.

“I understand we are living in very dynamic and sensitive times, and my past utterances may have caused problems in the country. I am remorseful and humbly seeking forgiveness," the letter read.

He had claimed that the MPs were offered Sh2 million each for voting Yes.

In his statement, Koimburi admitted to making the claims but insisted he does not have any evidence that the MPs indeed received the money.

“I was in church and I made a mistake by saying that the Members of Parliament that voted YES, were bribed with Sh2 million. I am here to say sorry to the members because I don't have any evidence that they received money,” he said.

“That was just a hearsay that I heard when we were voting during the second reading of the Finance Bill.”

Wetang'ula told the house that the legislator visited him at the Speaker's Chamber and “I called the Clerk to join and he said many of the things he has said here.”

While reacting to his statement, Gilgil MP Martha Wangari said many members suffered greatly as many were harassed as a result of the sentiments.

This, as she urged the house to set a precedent such that no member can make allegations outside the Parliament incriminating the MPs and get away with it.

“We must have him pay damages but more importantly we must have actions taken against him by the Powers and Privileges Committee,” she stated.

"They must be clear so that next time any member who would like to drag the names of Members under the bus to look good then they will think twice."

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi on his part alleged that some of the MPs lost properties because of the allegations that they were bribed.

“Is Hon. Koimburi ready to go back to the same church and apologise from the same church that he lied?” he posed.
