Health Cabinet Secretary nominee Deborah Barasa excited members of the Appointments Committee on Thursday during her vetting when she explained how she will deal with cartels at Afya House.

Responding to a question by National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, Barasa stated that she has the strength and capability to 'manage them'.

Speaker Moses Wetang'ula was, however, quick to correct her saying “You can’t manage them, you confront them.”

That is what you have been asked, you eliminate them...Your colleague who came earlier said you neutralise them,” he said amidst laughter from the members.

In her submission, Barasa said she would focus on prevention rather than treatment especially when it comes to procurement processes to seal corruption loopholes.

We can use a digital platform, open tenders and even independent bodies to monitor the tendering processes,” Barasa said.

In delivering her mandate, the nominee further vowed to uphold professionalism and integrity.

Barasa was the second nominee to appear before the Committee on Appointments Committee.

The committee is chaired by Speaker Moses Wetang'ula.

Interior CS nominee Kindiki Kithure was the first to appear in the morning.
