The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has said it managed to collect Sh43.9 billion from the tax amnesty programme that ended on June 30.

According to KRA, the collection was from 1,064,667 taxpayers.

Through the programme, KRA disclosed that it waived penalties and interest amounting to Sh507.7 billion benefiting 3,115,393 taxpayers.

“The waivers include those that were offered automatically after taxpayers filed their returns, declared and paid their principal taxes,” it said.

The initiative which ran between September 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, was aimed at providing much-needed relief to taxpayers with outstanding tax obligations.

KRA, in a statement, noted that this was most successful in the month of June 2024 when it recorded the highest collection of Sh15.1 billion.

A tax amnesty is periodic and targeted for a class of persons or activities with the aim of addressing a specific problem or achieving a specific objective.

The Finance Act, of 2023 introduced the tax amnesty programme which allowed taxpayers to apply for amnesty of penalties and interests on tax debt for periods up to December 31, 2022.

This followed the repeal of the provisions on abandonment and waivers of penalties and interest.

Under the programme, taxpayers were only required to pay the principal tax amount of their outstanding tax debts.
