The Party of National Unity (PNU) now wants the Azimio la Umoja chairperson Uhuru Kenyatta to convene a meeting of all Azimio constituent parties to discuss the coalition’s future.
PNU, which is led by former Agriculture CS and Meru governor Peter Munya, said the inclusion of Azimio affiliate party members in Kenya Kwanza is untenable.
“Neither can the same be a Government of National Unity. As a matter of fact, all indicators point to a government united against the people who continue to hanker for change, reduced cost of living better living standards, rule of law and justice,” the party said.
“It is against this backdrop that we as PNU cannot, in good conscience follow our brothers from a section of the Azimio coalition into forming government.”
Four ODM leaders who have since resigned from the party were nominated for Cabinet positions by President William Ruto.
These nominees include ODM chair and Nominated MP John Mbadi (Treasury), Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi (Energy), former Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho (Mining and Blue Economy), and former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya (Cooperatives and MSMEs Development).
In a statement issued after a Special National Executive Council meeting on Thursday, PNU further rejected calls for a national dialogue.
It said the Azimio meeting should reach a resolution on the future of the opposition coalition.
“That the Party of National Unity hereby gives notice to the Chairperson of the Azimio La Umoja, One Kenya Coalition Party to immediately constitute a meeting of all Azimio constituent parties where an all-inclusive resolution should be reached on the way forward for the coalition,” read the statement.
