Treasury Cabinet Secretary nominee John Mbadi explained on Saturday why he is the best candidate for the position.

Mbadi who is appearing for vetting highlighted his extensive experience with financial matters as a key qualification for the position. 

He said for the last 15 years he has been in parliament, he has always been a member of the budget and appropriations committee which has the responsibility and mandate to prepare the country's budget.

"I was an assistant minister in the office of the Prime minister and my responsibility was to supervise and coordinate government functions in all ministries which is very much in line with treasury," he said.

"During this time, I interacted a lot with the Kenyan budget and the macro-economic policies, I can attest that I have interacted with the budget review outlook paper which is prepared every year. I am comfortable with how to generate budget policy statements," he stated.

Mbadi is among the five nominees scheduled to appear today for vetting.

Others are Salim Mvurya (Trade), Rebecca Miano (Tourism), Opiyo Wandayi (Energy), and Kipchumba Murkomen (Sports).

Mbadi currently serves as the chair of the powerful Public Accounts Committee, which is responsible for holding to account ministries, departments and agencies.

He has 28 years of experience in the fields of finance, leadership and politics.

He first joined Parliament when he was elected to represent the Gwassi Constituency in the National Assembly of Kenya in 2007.

Mbadi was the MP of Suba South Constituency in the 12th Parliament where he also served as the Leader of the Minority Party

In September 2012, Mbadi was appointed the Assistant Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, a position he held until the 2013 general elections.

Mbadi attended Lingongo Primary School and later joined Kokuro Boys Secondary School for his secondary education.

He attended the University of Nairobi in 1992 and graduated in 1996 with a Bachelor of Commerce in 2004.

In 2007, he obtained a Master of Business Administration.

Mbadi was Finance Director at Medair East Africa- South Sudan Programme between 2004-2008.

He was a senior accountant at the University of Nairobi from 1999-2003.

Mbadi was an accountant at the University of Nairobi Enterprise Services (UNES) from 2000-2002 and an assistant accountant at the University of Nairobi from 1996-1999.
