Nairobi man shot dead after attempting to break into Kenya Police store

Detectives are investigating a dramatic and tragic incident where a suspect was shot and killed in a suspected attempt to break into the official Kenya Police Central Stores in Nairobi.

The store keeps major Kenya Police items including uniforms, boots, berets, teargas canisters, buttons and other equipment they use.

The shooting took place Sunday, August 4 night when one of the police officers on duty said he heard commotion from one of the stores there.

The officer told his superiors he alerted his colleagues after realizing the commotion could be the work of a thief and they all moved to where it emanated.

The team said they found one unknown male adult who was armed with a crude weapon breaking the store.

They added they challenged him to surrender but the suspect defied and tried to escape on foot in the 9 pm drama.

One of the officers opened fire and fatally wounded the suspect.

A Kenya Police beret and a communication gadget that was allegedly stolen from the same store was recovered from the slain man, police said.

Senior officers visited the scene and moved the body to the mortuary.

Police said they are investigating the shooting and establish if the man was involved in the said break-in.

Nairobi police commander Adamson Bungei said the team wants to know more about the suspect and his past activities.

They want to establish if he had also been involved in such past incidents and his motives.

The store is one of the most guarded premises as it holds what police term as crucial government stores.

Police said they would also visit the slain man’s house for a search to establish if he had any more of the stores.

This will however happen after he is identified, police said on Monday.

An identification process was launched at the City mortuary where the body was moved, police said.
